United States Surpasses Australia and Qatar to Become World’s Largest LNG Exporter
The United States has, for the first time, become the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), surpassing major suppliers Australia and Qatar in 2023. The U.S. exported 91.2 million tons of LNG in 2023, setting a national record. This increase in exports is attributed to the restart of the Freeport LNG plant in Texas last year, which had been closed for several months following a fire and explosion in June 2022. Qatar’s exports shrank for the first time since at least 2016, dropping to third place globally.
